History of the INTERNET
" INTERNET " is the name literally derived from 'interconnection of the computer networks'. The internet started off in the 1960's under the original name of 'ARPAnet'. ARPAnet was originally a research project in the US military for maintaining communications in case of a possible nuclear strike. Later on, ARPAnet grew to become a civilian experiment for connecting university mainframe computers for academic purposes. With the personal computer (PC) becoming the in-thing in the 1980's and 1990's, the Internet started to grow exponentially.MOre and more users wanted to get their computers connected to the massive network.
Today, the Internet has grown into a public 'spider web' whereby millions of personal, government, and commercial computers, are all connected either by wired or wireless means. There are technical rules/policies for the hardware and the software standards to ensure users can plug their machines into the Internet correctly. However, no single person or government actually owns or controls the Internet. Generally, the Internet is a free and open access entity for global users to use and share data, information, and many other resources.
